I have written a book. I finished it at the end of my pregnancy and haven’t touched it since, though I have thought about it nearly every day. It feels like I haven’t been in touch with a dearly loved friend.
My wonderful mother read it and corrected the spelling and grammar (extensively), and the manuscript is sat in my bedside table waiting. I have a lot of changes and additions I want to make and I lie in bed at night thinking about it.
It is the first in a series, much of which I’ve mapped out, and is a children’s book. I am incredibly proud of it, but since Miss Rose was born I haven’t had time to sit at it. I can’t do it in bits and bobs like I can my blog, I can’t do it when I’m tired, I need time to just sit uninterrupted and write and concentrate and think.
Until now this hasn’t been an option. She was breastfeeding and therefore I was the only person who could take charge of her. But suddenly I find myself with a bottle baby that sleeps at night and can be looked after and put to bed by people other than me.
I heard once that you know you’re a writer if the first thing you think about when you get up in the morning is writing. I don’t. I think about Rose. But perhaps a saying for mothers is that you know you’re a writer if the opportunity for a day off is available and you think about writing not getting drunk!
Will anything come of my book? Probably not. But maybe some people will read it and maybe a few of them will like it. I certainly miss writing it. I will keep you updated. If one day you see a book starring young Miss Lily Prospero on the shelves in your local bookshop I will be very proud.
