I have recently lifted my ban on children’s tv. I still don’t have it on that often, but I do now indulge. When Miss Rose is in a bad mood it distracts her. When I’ve got lots of jobs to do it amuses her. She still doesn’t sit still in front of it, and constantly gets up to mischief, but it has its place.

The thing is… I’m learning…

We watch Something Special and learn sign language from Mr Tumble. We watch Nina And The Neurons and learn science from Nina. We watch Get Well Soon and learn about medical problems from Dr Ranj and his horribly trendy hair do. I actually do learn… If she falls asleep during one of these shows I leave it on until it’s finished. I told my husband to shush until I’d found the remote to pause yesterday because he started talking over Nina.

I’m a little concerned about how I ever managed to pass my GCSE’s if education aimed at pre-schoolers educates me at nearly 30. Does this mean that once Miss Rose progresses into year 2 at school I won’t be able to help her anymore? I know I will be able to still teach her a few things but I am very relieved there are a lot of smart people in my life that can help such as her aunty Aimee-Rose who’s an amazing teacher and her granny who’s a brilliant doctor. But there’s one person I hope will pass on lots of his cleverness to her!

My baby brother, Miss Rose’s Unky Dick, is something of a genius. At the tender age of 24 he has a first class physics masters degree, has nearly finished his PhD, and is invited round the world to various conferences and events to speak to the physics world’s best and brightest. I honestly couldn’t be prouder, he’s amazing. He is also tall, strong, and very handsome. Plus children love him. Therefore I am trying to convince him to do something useful with these qualifications and do a show on CBeebies. Yes, he could help the war on terrorism. He could find an alternative power source. He could go to the moon. He could take over the world. But how much cooler would it be to see him teaching the next generation on tv! Okay… Technically MAYBE fighting terrorism would be better… But he could do both. So long as he agrees to help Miss Rose with her homework I don’t mind what he does, but I certainly have high hopes.

  1. I’m glad I’m not the only one who learns from CBeebies! 🙂 Luckily, children get to learn all sorts of things from all sorts of sources. Sounds like your little one has a lot of clever people around her.
