The year 2013, the second year Miss Rose has been alive in, is drawing to a close. In two hours time it will be 2014 and the whole cycle of snow, sun, birthdays and Christmas starts all over again.
Looking back on 2013 I’m not looking on it to see what I’ve seen or done, I’m looking on it in amazement at what Miss Rose has learned and achieved. At the start of the year she was a month old. At the end she is thirteen months old. She is a laughing, walking, sleeping, talking living doll who has gone from inanimate blob to hysterically funny little person in just one year.
In a year she has learned more than I have learned in a decade and I am immensely proud. Nobody likes a bragging mum but right now I don’t care. I’m going to brag about her because she is my achievement therefore technically I am bragging about myself and if I don’t blow my own trumpet nobody will. Although if I ever were to blow a trumpet that would not be something to brag about.
She has learned what a joke is and how to make one. She has learned what fear is and how to confront it. She has learned what language is and how to use it. She has learned to move, communicate, laugh and dance. She has made friends. These are all things adults with experience of the world struggle with yet my incredible child has done it by herself from scratch.
What have I learned? I’ve learned the intensity of a mother’s love. I have learned the depths to which I can dig out patience. I have learned that when your child sneezes in your mouth you actually do survive! What a wonderful experience.
Next year I will see even more. She will learn even more and do even more and yes… I will brag even more. We will have more hard times, more sleepless nights, more vomit to scrub up and poo to avoid. She’ll sneeze in my mouth more. Pull my hair more. Probably attack more children so I have to make more grovelling apologies to more parents.
Good luck 2014. 2013 rocked. I hope you kick it’s ass.
