There’s an old saying that blood is thicker than water, meaning that family matters more than anyone else.
I won’t be teaching this to Miss Rose.
Don’t get me wrong, I strongly believe in the value of family and the importance of family is something she will be taught… Just not at the expense of the value of friends.
What makes a family? Is it a biological connection? My adopted husband has no biological connection to his family, but they are his family. I have no biological connection to my in laws but they’re my family. So no it’s not biology.
Is it regular contact? I rarely see my cousins, aunts and uncles but they are family. I see staff at the gym who, whilst I get on with them like friends, aren’t family. Perhaps quality time? Let me assure you that some of the time spent with some if my family is not even approximating quality.
To me family means more than any of those things. Miss Rose has aunties like aunty Aimee-Rose and aunty Abi who are not my sisters but they are my family. She has uncles like Uncle Jiminy and Uncle Leo who matter just as much to her as my brother. Her best friend Imelda has been in her life for nearly all of it, who can tell her that Imelda matters less than someone some relative gave birth to does?
Ultimately I think knowing you will do anything for someone and that you truly love them beyond a standard friendship makes them family. I am blessed with some spectacular friends who I will always hold closer in my heart than some of my family I would sooner avoid.
That is what Miss Rose will learn. Love. Blood is thicker than water but love is thicker than anything.
