Miss Rose and I are artists.
Whilst technically it is true that we are highly unlikely to make our fortune from our creations, we are artists none the less. Unleash us with fingers paints or crayons and you will discover we make some rather spectacular creations.
I have always loved art. Before Miss Rose I would draw, paint, design and make clothes, and decorate furniture. I find it relaxing and fun and, just like cooking, I love to see a finished creation that was just “stuff” before I got my hands on it. I hope to pass on this pleasure to Miss Rose, and so far it is working.
Miss Rose loves any opportunity to get grubby. She is not squeamish about having mucky hands, as is evident by her enthusiastic and… interesting… style of eating. I just love to let her get her hands covered in paint and then set her free on paper or canvas. Yesterday we got out pink and green finger paint and lots of sticky glitter and went to town on a giant canvas. It’s fabulous.
Before my husband left we had made a hand print canvas. It featured his hand print in blue, then mine in yellow, with hers in pink on top. It was lovely. He didn’t enjoy it, complained about getting finger paint on his trousers, and hurried off back to his computer game as soon as he could. But the finished creation was something I treasured. It was ours and it was personal.
A couple of weeks after he left I took it down from the wall. It hurt. But I have missed having something there. Something that was us.
Green and pink are the new colours we have decorated our living room, and our new giant canvas is the perfect addition. It is not the controlled design of previous. It’s mayhem. It’s us. She tried to stomp on it a few times and her slippers ended up caked in finger paint and glitter, we both had it all over our clothes, most of our furniture got a generous helping, and I’m fairly certain she consumed a significant amount. But she loved it. I loved it. We made art.
What is art? Art is whatever you damn well want it to be. I don’t believe “art” is narrowly defined. What we made is art. It may not be to everyone’s taste, and most people might not want it on their walls, but it’s art and we love it. If you make art you’re an artist.
