At Easter and Christmas a lot of posts come up on Facebook and Twitter about the “True Meaning” and how sad it is that people are celebrating these festivals without teaching their children about the Christian message behind them.
Easter has become all about chocolate eggs and bunnies, Christmas about gifts and Santa.
I am not a Christian but I do celebrate both festivals, and I am raising Miss Rose to enjoy them too. But we celebrate the original festivals of these times.
Today we celebrated Easter.
Easter is a pagan festival of new life. Eggs, bunnies and chicks are all celebrating the end of Winter and Spring breathing in new life to the world. Baby animals being born and starting their fresh lives. It is truly a beautiful thing, and well worth celebrating. Yes, the Christians appropriated it and used the same “new life” message in the story of the crucifixion and Jesus’ emergence from the tomb, but that doesn’t mean that suddenly the original message is lost or worthless. It is worth celebrating.
But, say you don’t want to celebrate either. Say you truly do just want to enjoy chocolate eggs, gifts, playing games with family, eating nice food and having fun. Say you find happiness and joy from those simple things. Who is to say that is wrong? Who is to say that finding joy from those things, joy in the general difficulties of life, is worth less than the reasons you choose to celebrate?
If you are not a Christian then the Christian story has little value. If you are not Pagan then the Pagan message is of little importance. If chocolate eggs and laughter are all that matter to you on this one day then good for you. Celebrate, have fun with your family, and enjoy.
Celebrate for your own reasons. If you think your children need a specific reason then teach it to them. If you think chocolate and fun is enough then enjoy them. The reasons other people have fun with their families shouldn’t impact your life or your celebration.
Happy Easter x
