Miss Rose is currently dressed as Eeyore. I’m Minnie Mouse. Today is
Sunday and on Sunday we wear fancy dress.
Because we can.
In a former life I sold fancy dress items online and, consequently, have a wardrobe full of costumes from Princess Jasmine to Cat Woman. Before Miss Rose, in this same former life, I used to go out drinking and dancing regularly and we often had fancy dress nights. Since having Miss Rose these costumes just sat unworn in my wardrobe.
One day I dressed up as Minnie Mouse just for Rose, just to make her smile. It worked and she loved it. So it became a tradition.
Most Sundays we wear fancy dress, but carry on as normal. Walk the dog, go to the swimming pool, buy any food we need etc. it just makes a normal Sunday that bit more entertaining, and means we get to wear our costumes!
Most people smile and laugh, indeed I had a conversation with a nice chap when walking the dog at half seven this morning who told me about his daughter and how she enjoys fancy dress.
Other people roll their eyes. Because we look daft. How dare a parent be so silly as to wear fancy dress and look funny just for the sake of it? I should grow up and behave myself.
Balls to that I say!
I remember being a child. I remember how much fun you can have with adults who are prepared to make fools of themselves just for your entertainment. I don’t believe fun needs a reason, fun is reason in itself. To forget that is one of the tragedies of adulthood that many fall into the trap of. You’re a grown up now, no more silliness allowed.
In our house silliness is embraced and celebrated. Fun is had just because we like it. Fancy dress is worn just because it’s Sunday.
